A relentless detective tracks down a cunning outlaw across 19th Century France, engaging in a thrilling game of cat and mouse.

Jean Valjean, a former galley slave, is released and seeks shelter with a kindly bishop, who teaches him to read and write. After being caught stealing the bishop's silver, Valjean is transformed by the bishop's forgiveness and establishes a new life as a factory manager and mayor in a small village. However, his past catches up with him when Javert, a relentless policeman, recognizes him and pursues him, leading Valjean to flee and abandon his property.
