As one of the fortunate few, Hugo achieved widespread popularity during his lifetime, earning him a reputation as a leading figure in French Romanticism. In 1843, following the tragic loss of his daughter Leopoldine, Hugo became increasingly involved in politics, joining the Paris Chamber and advocating for left-wing ideals.
Despite his dedication to politics, Hugo's life took a dramatic turn with the re-establishment of the monarchy in 1851. Forced into exile on the island of Guernsey, he spent nearly two decades in self-imposed isolation, where he continued to produce his remarkable literary works, including the iconic novel "Les Misérables," which was penned during this period of exile.
Upon his return to Paris in 1870, Hugo refrained from re-entering the political arena, instead devoting himself fully to his literary pursuits, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to captivate readers to this day.
