A poet abandons his family's heritage to pursue his artistic dreams in Paris, only to confront the harsh realities of the creative world.
In 1820s France, a young poet named Lucien de Rubempre arrives in Paris with a dream of getting published. After taking on various lowly jobs, he lands a position as a journalist and art critic, where he becomes disillusioned with the corruption and manipulation of the press.
