Maria and Bing Wang, a married couple in their senior years, emigrated from Hong Kong to Vancouver 40 years ago. They live on the working-class east side, near Hastings Park. Bing, once a successful accountant, now runs his own firm in Chinatown, while Maria dedicated herself to being a housewife and mother. With their daughter married and their son estranged, Maria feels her purpose is to care for Bing, but she's dependent on him for everything. She's uncomfortable speaking English and doesn't know how to drive or ride a bike. When Maria discovers an upcoming event, she feels the need for independence, which she equates with having her own money. Without telling Bing, she searches for a job, a challenging task at 60 years old and without work experience since Hong Kong. As she resorts to unconventional means to earn money, Maria may discover that independence is not just about financial freedom, but also a state of mind.
