Cathleen Harris, a teenager, has spent nearly two years at the Convent of the Beloved Rose in the American south, having initially joined as a postulant and later taking her first vows to become a novice. Raised in a non-religious household, Cathleen's decision to become a nun defies her mother's wishes and may be more deeply considered than her peers. The convent is led by the strict Reverend Mother Marie Saint Clare, who has not left the convent in 40 years and believes she is the voice of God, refusing to tolerate any questioning of her authority.
