Marshall Chapman is an American singer-songwriter-author, born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1957, a life-changing experience occurred when she was taken to the Carolina Theatre in downtown Spartanburg to see Elvis Presley perform, which had a profound impact on her life.
To date, she has released fourteen critically acclaimed albums, with her 2013 release, Blaze of Glory, being hailed as a masterpiece, and her most recent album, Songs I Can't Live Without (2020),being proclaimed by the Associated Press as "perhaps her best".
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Marshall has been live-streaming every Saturday at 1pm PT (4pm ET) on Facebook, titled "Perfect Imperfection", which is free to watch.
Chapman's songs have been recorded by notable artists such as Emmylou Harris, Joe Cocker, Irma Thomas, and Jimmy Buffett.
In 2010, she made her film debut, playing Gwyneth Paltrow's road manager in Country Strong, and simultaneously released a book (They Came to Nashville) and CD (Big Lonesome),which received critical acclaim.
Of her three rocking' albums for Epic, the Al Kooper-produced Jaded Virgin was voted Record of the Year (1978) by Stereo Review, and her album, It's About Time... (Island, 1995),recorded live at the Tennessee State Prison for Women, drew rave reviews from Time, USA Today, and the Village Voice.
Chapman's first book, Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller (St. Martin's Press),was a SIBA bestseller, 2004 SIBA Book Award finalist, and one of three finalists for the Southern Book Critics Circle Award, and is now in its third printing.
Since Country Strong, Chapman has continued to land film roles, including Mississippi Grind (2015),Lovesong (2016),and Novitiate (2017).
Marshall is also a contributing editor to Garden & Gun and Nashville Arts Magazine, and has written for various publications, including The Oxford American, Southern Living, W, Performing Songwriter, and The Bob Edwards Show (Sirius/XM). She describes music as her "first and last love".
