In the 1875 Dakota Territory, a peace treaty between the US and the Sioux Nation is disrupted by a gold rush, drawing settlers and prospectors into the Black Hills despite the treaty. Captain Webb Calhoun, a strict and experienced officer, is tasked with keeping the gold seekers out of Sioux lands, but he faces opposition from saloon owner Ira Jordan, who wants to encourage gold-digging on Indian lands. When a new commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Unger, takes over the fort, he is easily swayed by Jordan's lies about Sioux attacks on settlers and farmers, leading to a tragic conflict between the US Army and the Sioux Nation.
