In 1888, a luthier's home in Amsterdam is demolished to make way for the Victoria Hotel, forcing him to relocate. Meanwhile, his cousin, a pharmacist, is in trouble for illegal medical practices and seeks a way out. He concocts a scheme to emigrate to the United States with his wife and a group of poor peat cutters, promising them a better life. The plan ultimately leads to devastating consequences.
