Claude, a widowed theater critic, lives in Monterey, California with his friend Shane. He's worried about his family, especially his daughter Selma and granddaughter Tania, after his son-in-law David's scandalous affair with prostitutes. To cope, Claude tries to revive his old job and accidentally discovers that his first love, actress Lillian Blanche, has Alzheimer's. He asks Shane to help him fake Alzheimer's to be close to Lillian and help her remember him. Despite initial failures, Claude perseveres, using letters and DVDs of Lillian's performances. However, his plan is complicated by his family's discovery, David's schemes to use Claude, and Shane's betrayal.
