Sabrina, a teenage witch, travels to Rome with her talking cat and mouse to find her 16th-century aunt Sophia, who was banished for revealing her powers to a non-witch. Sabrina's mission is to open her golden locket and free Sophia. She stays with her Italian relatives, including her clumsy and budding witch niece Gwen, who joins her on the quest. However, Sabrina's use of magic attracts two tabloid reporters, Paul and Travis, who are trying to expose a real witch. Paul, an American-adopted Italian, initially tries to trick Sabrina but eventually falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Gwen's impatience causes her to accidentally transform her admirer Alberto into a street pigeon. The girls find a way to Sophia's secret through a portrait by a Renaissance painter who was important to her aunt's life.
