In 1919, a father-son duo from Ukraine, Stefan and Mike, flee Russia's war and struggle to make a living in Winnipeg, Canada, facing exploitation and discrimination as immigrants. Stefan falls for his Jewish neighbor, Rebecca, but their families disapprove. Meanwhile, returned soldiers lash out at immigrants, including Emma and Gabriel, who are seeking refuge from violence and racism.
