In December 1899, Dr. Edward Newgate, a newly minted Oxford graduate, arrives at Stonehearst Asylum to hone his skills in asylum medicine. He's greeted by armed men and introduced to Dr. Silas Lamb, who takes him under his wing. As Edward observes the asylum's unusual methods, he becomes enamored with Eliza Graves, a refined patient who seems out of place. However, his growing unease is validated when he discovers a mysterious knocking sound, leading him to question everything about the asylum and ultimately forcing him to make a difficult choice.
