Sonny, a Texas preacher, faces a crisis when his wife Jessie's affair with a young minister, Horace, is revealed. Enraged, Sonny puts Horace in a coma with a softball bat and flees, adopting a new name, Apostle E.F. He finds work as a mechanic in Louisiana and begins preaching on the radio and in public, eventually partnering with Reverend Blackwell to renovate an old church.
