In 1986, Jack Slavin, an engineer, and his teenage daughter Rose live in isolation on Marsh Island, where they built a commune in 1968. Rose's mother left when she was five, and Jack has raised her with a strong sense of ecological preservation, which puts them at odds with Marty Rance, who's building a housing complex on the island. Jack's heart condition means he won't live forever, so he asks Kathleen, his girlfriend of four months, to move in with her two sons, Rodney and Thaddius, to ensure Rose's future.
