Andrew Crocker-Harris, a classics teacher, is leaving his English boys school after 18 years. Despite being academically brilliant, he's universally disliked for being strict, stern, and humorless, earning him the nickname "The Crock." His wife, Millie, is younger and vivacious, but no longer loves him, having an affair with another teacher, Frank. On his last day, a student, Taplow, shows kindness, bringing a series of events that make Mr. Crocker-Harris reflect on his past, contemplate his future, and evaluate his remaining time at the school.
