In 19th century New Orleans, a new class of colored people has emerged, born from relationships between African-Americans and wealthy Europeans. Despite love and children, marriage is out of the question due to racial inequality. Henriette Delille, a devoted creole, dedicates her time to education, care, and church work. When her father announces his decision to marry a white woman, Henriette is expected to meet her arranged caretaker, Paul Cartier, but she refuses, defying tradition and driving her mother to madness. Henriette befriends French doctor Gerard Gaultier, who is in love with her and wants to marry her in France. torn between her feelings for Gerard and her devotion to the church, Henriette must make a difficult choice, facing disapproval from those who resist breaking with tradition.
