Upstanding citizen Ed Smart's life is turned upside down when his youngest daughter Mary Katherine is the only witness to the kidnapping of her sister Elizabeth from their home. Despite initially being treated as suspects, Ed and his eldest son Charles, the investigation focuses on jailed pedophile Richard Ricci. However, it becomes clear that Ricci is innocent, and the case goes cold. Meanwhile, the real kidnapper, a homeless handyman turned self-proclaimed prophet, attempts to brainwash Elizabeth, but ultimately meets his downfall due to his own demons.
