Alfred Polly, still pining for Christabel, marries Miriam and opens a shop, but the marriage becomes stale. He fakes his own death by burning down the shop, only to become a hero when he saves a deaf old lady. He uses the insurance money to leave his wife and starts a new life at the Potwell Inn, where he faces off against the violent nephew Jim. After Jim's accidental drowning, Polly assumes his identity and starts a new life, free from his troubles.
