A stoker on an American passenger liner finds an abandoned baby and raises him as his own, naming him 1900. The child grows up on the ship, becoming a musical prodigy, particularly at the piano. As an adult, 1900 befriends a trumpet player in the ship's band, Max Tooney. After several years, Max leaves the ship and shares 1900's remarkable story with a music store owner.
