Petey Brown, a singer, finds herself working at a nightclub owned by the shady Nicky Toresca, while trying to evade his advances. She falls in love with a down-on-his-luck ex-jazz pianist, San Thomas, who is struggling to move on from his past divorce. As Petey helps her siblings and their neighbor overcome their issues, she waits for San to decide whether to start anew with her or take a chance on a merchant steamer.
