Manny Balestrero, a string bassist, devoted husband and father, and practicing Catholic, faces financial struggles playing at the Stork Club. When his wife Rose incurs major dental bills, Manny considers borrowing from her life insurance policy. However, at the insurance office, he's identified as a suspect in a series of hold-ups, including two previous incidents at the same office. As Manny cooperates with the police, he becomes increasingly guilty in their eyes. With the help of their lawyer, Frank O'Connor, the Balestreros try to prove Manny's innocence, but the situation may cause irreparable damage to their lives.
