Alice Brooks ASC is a renowned American director of photography, celebrated for her exceptional cinematography work in feature films. Born and raised in Los Angeles and New York, Brooks is the daughter of Candace Coulston from South Bristol, Maine, and the late playwright Stephen Levi, whose numerous plays were published by Samuel French.
As a child, Brooks acted in various national television commercial spots and had a recurring role on Late Night With David Letterman. She graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts magna cum laude in 2001.
Brooks has collaborated with director Jon M. Chu on several projects, including In the Heights, which received widespread critical acclaim for its cinematography, and Tick, Tick... Boom!, Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut starring Andrew Garfield and produced by Ron Howard.
Her other notable works include The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, Jem and the Holograms, and Home Before Dark, Apple TV+'s 2020 crime-drama series. Brooks will work again with Chu on the two-part film adaptation of Stephan Schwartz's Broadway musical Wicked for Universal Pictures, with the first part released in November 2024.
Brooks' work on The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion, directed by Farah X and Lisa Cortés, premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and won awards from several film festivals, including Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival, Milwaukee Film Festival, Napa Valley Film Festival, and the Sidewalk Film Festival. Her work has been featured on the cover of ICG Magazine.
In addition to her feature film work, Brooks has also worked on 2021's Queen Bees, a comedy-drama starring Ellen Burstyn, Jane Curtin, Loretta Devine, and James Caan.
Throughout her career, Brooks has received numerous awards and nominations, including the WorldFest-Houston's Independent Short Subject-Films & Video - Cinematography - Shorts Platinum Award in 2004 for her work on Charlie 2.0, and the SUMOLIGHT Creative Synergy Award at the 2024 Manaki Brothers Film Festival for her work on Wicked.
In her personal life, Brooks has been married to Samuel Spencer since September 8, 2012.
