Biography

Allen Bernard Martin, Jr., a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on the world, passed away on February 6, 2021, at the age of 84, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Born in Malden, Massachusetts, to Allen Martin, Sr., and Marion Brown, Allen's passion for acting began at a tender age of seven, as he took to the stage in the 1943 Broadway production of The Patriots at City Center. This marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career on Broadway, where he appeared in numerous productions, including Galileo, A Young Man's Fancy, The Happy Journey, I Know My Love, and The Happy Time.

Allen's talents soon took him to Hollywood, where he starred in two films: the 1949 United Artist production of Johnny Holiday, opposite William Bendix, and the 1951 Columbia production of Her First Romance, alongside Margaret O'Brien, in which he gave her her first screen kiss.

After completing his education at Princeton University, where he earned his BA in European Civilization, and the University of Alabama, where he received his MA in French Studies, Allen embarked on a teaching career overseas and in the United States, at the University of Alabama and Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

In his later years, Allen transitioned to a career in computer business programs, utilities, and Dungeons & Dragons games, serving as a manager for the writing of manuals.

As a social worker at Atlantic County's Department of Family and Community Development, Allen dedicated himself to advocating for his clients, often acting as a translator, drawing on his vast knowledge of languages. His compassion, wit, and warm smile made him a beloved figure, and he was known for lifting the mood of those around him with his light jokes and upbeat songs.

Allen is survived by his two daughters, Holly Doyle and Brigit Capaldi; his son, Oliver Martin; his niece, Elizabeth MacWilliam; and his five grandchildren, Lily, Willow, Coco, Luna, and Gavin. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Simone Martin, and his older brother, William Martin.
