Ana Matronic is a multifaceted artist, musician, author, DJ, radio and television presenter, and public speaker who rose to fame as the lone female member of the rock group Scissor Sisters.
As a performer, Matronic is equally at home commanding attention in dingy bars as she is captivating massive crowds in iconic venues like Hyde Park. Her sharp wit and formidable stage presence have earned her a reputation as a skilled emcee, honed through her early days performing at San Francisco's legendary drag night Trannyshack in the late 1990s.
Since her award-winning rise with Scissor Sisters in 2004, Matronic has collaborated with an impressive array of legendary artists, including Elton John, New Order, Duran Duran, Mark Ronson, and RuPaul's Drag Race winners Sharon Needles and Alaska. She is also working on her debut solo record.
In addition to her music career, Matronic has become a member of the legendary visual "band" The Joshua Light Show, a psychedelic pioneers group founded by Joshua White. As a member of the group, Matronic creates live psychedelic imagery using liquid colors on a custom-built overhead projector, a skill she has developed further through collaborative live performances with artists such as Lou Reed, Television, Steve Reich, Silver Apples, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Manuel Gottsching.
Matronic made her debut as a broadcaster on BBC Radio 2 in 2014, hosting her own show, Disco Devotion, and has since become a regular on the station, covering topics such as rare groove disco and European music. She has also made guest appearances on TV, including hosting an episode of BBC Artsnight and discussing topics ranging from popular culture to artificial intelligence to politics and human rights.
As an author, Matronic has written the story Rock Block for the 2010 tribute comic to legendary punk club CBGB, published by BOOM! Comics. Her first full-length book, Robot Takeover: 100 Iconic Robots of Myth, Popular Culture, and Real Life, was published by Hachette/Octopus in 2015.
Matronic is also a founding member of the activist organization Witches Against Fascist Totalitarianism (WAFT). She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and collaborator Seth Kirby and their cat Izzy.
