London-born Anthony Pelissier, son of renowned actress Fay Compton and producer H.G. Pelissier, embarked on a career in acting during the 1930s, only to discover a profound inclination towards crafting films rather than appearing in them. This nascent understanding led him to secure his first screenwriting credit in 1937, a milestone that marked the beginning of a successful career in writing that would span many years.
As Pelissier continued to hone his craft, he remained in the writing field until making his directorial debut in 1949. Although his tenure as a director was relatively brief, lasting only five years, his film adaptations of esteemed British literary works showcased his remarkable talent. Among his notable directorial endeavors were the adaptations of H.G. Wells' The History of Mr. Polly, D.H. Lawrence's The Rocking Horse Winner, and W. Somerset Maugham's Encore.
Pelissier's final film, Meet Mr. Lucifer (1953),was a satirical exploration of the television medium. Following his departure from film direction, he went on to occupy the esteemed position of head of experimental production at the BBC.
