The close artistic collaboration between Defurne and his writer-producer Yves Verbraeken dates back to his early days as a filmmaker. Before focusing on writing and directing, Defurne worked as a decorator for renowned filmmakers such as Peter Greenaway and was also an assistant director for German media artist Matthias Müller. In addition to his work in film, Defurne has created a number of commercials, including the music video for the popular band Hooverphonic's song "Anger Never Dies".
Born on June 8th, 1971, in Ghent, Belgium, Defurne grew up in the coastal town of Ostend. His father, a sea captain, and his mother, a biology teacher, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the natural world and the human experience, which is reflected in his work.
