Bess Wohl's impressive body of work includes a diverse range of plays, films, and television projects. Her plays have been featured in top ten lists across various publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and the New York Post, and are currently on a national tour.
Wohl's theatrical credits include Small Mouth Sounds, American Hero, Barcelona, Touched, In, Cats Talk Back, and Pretty Filthy, in collaboration with Michael Friedman and The Civilians. Her plays have received multiple Ovation Award nominations and have been produced or developed at various theaters, including Second Stage, Manhattan Theatre Club, Ars Nova, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Geffen Playhouse, and the Goodman Theater.
In addition to her work in theater, Wohl has also written for film and television. Her film, Irreplaceable You, premiered on Netflix in February 2018 and starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Christopher Walken, Kate McKinnon, and Steve Coogan. Wohl won an Athena Award for her original screenplay, Virginia, and her screenplay, IN, was included on Hollywood's Black List of best scripts.
Wohl has developed original television projects for HBO, ABC, USA, FOX, and other networks. Her plays have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Sam Norkin special Drama Desk Award for "establishing herself as an important voice in New York theater" and the John Gassner Outer Critics Circle Award.
As a MacDowell fellow, associate artist with The Civilians, and alumna of Ars Nova's Play Group, Wohl continues to be a prominent figure in the New York theater scene. She holds new play commissions from Lincoln Center, Manhattan Theater Club, Second Stage, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Hartford Stage.
Before pursuing a career in writing, Wohl worked as an actress, appearing onstage in New York and regionally, as well as in numerous films and TV shows. She is a graduate of Harvard and the Yale School of Drama.
