Biography

Billy May, a celebrated and multi-talented artist, has made a lasting impact on the music world with his distinctive and iconic style, earning him numerous Grammy Awards in various categories. Born to a roofer and a young person struggling with asthma, his doctor advised him to engage in therapeutic activities, specifically playing the tuba, to alleviate his condition.

May's nascent career trajectory underwent a pivotal transformation when he boldly approached the esteemed Charlie Barnet with a selection of his carefully crafted arrangements, which the renowned band leader graciously accepted, albeit without providing monetary compensation.

Several months elapsed, during which May repeatedly approached Barnet regarding the long-overdue payment, only to be met with an unexpected offer from the band leader - a coveted position within his orchestra.

May's contributions to the Barnet band's distinctive sound were multifaceted, as he was responsible for the arrangements of two of the band's most notable hits, "Cherokee" and "Redskin Rhumba."

Subsequently, the illustrious Glenn Miller became acquainted with the Barnet band's unique sonic identity and, impressed by May's skillset, successfully recruited him to join his orchestra as a performer and arranger.

May, a renowned figure in the world of music, had the privilege of arranging some of the most iconic tracks of his time, including the timeless "Serenade in Blue", the patriotic "American Patrol", and the unforgettable "Take the 'A' Train".

As World War II brought the Miller band to a halt, May found himself in Los Angeles, where he utilized his exceptional skills as a studio arranger for the esteemed organizations of NBC and Capitol Records.

In addition to his work in the recording studio, May also lent his expertise to the bands of the prominent jazz musicians Les Brown, Woody Herman, Alvino Rey, and Ozzie Nelson, solidifying his position as a master of his craft.

May's most lasting and enduring association was with the legendary Frank Sinatra, with whom he had the privilege of collaborating on numerous notable and iconic albums, including the timeless classics "Come Fly With Me" (1957),"Come Dance With Me" (1958),"Come Swing With Me" (1961),and the critically acclaimed "Trilogy" (1979).

Billy May's most recent and notable musical undertaking was the arrangement of a comprehensive 90th Anniversary compilation of Paramount Pictures' music, a collaborative effort with renowned composer-arranger Will Schaefer.

Although he was unable to see this project through to its completion due to his health issues, May's impressive body of work as a master trumpeter, arranger, and conductor continues to be widely acknowledged and revered, ensuring his enduring legacy in the world of music.
