Charles Stewart, better known as Chali 2na, is an American rapper with a distinctive baritone and quick delivery rapping style. Born on June 26, 1971, he rose to fame as a member of the influential hip-hop groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli.
Stewart's early life was marked by a move to South Central Los Angeles, where he was raised by his grandmother, a practicing Muslim, who instilled in him the Islamic faith. His stage name, Chali 2na, is a nod to Charlie the Tuna, the iconic mascot of StarKist Tuna, whose deep voice resonates with his own distinctive vocal style.
As a teenager, Stewart befriended Cut Chemist in high school, and together with Mark 7even, they formed the three-man group Unity Committee. The trio would regularly perform at the Good Life Café, an open mic haven where rappers and spoken word poets showcased their skills. The Unity Committee and another group, the Rebels of Rhythm, featuring MCs Akil and Daakir, developed a strong camaraderie, often teaming up to record and perform together.
In 1995, the two groups collaborated on the 12" single "Unified Rebelution," marking the beginning of their musical partnership. The Rebels of Rhythm would eventually evolve into Jurassic 5, with Stewart, Cut Chemist, and Mark 7even as founding members. In 2006, Cut Chemist decided to pursue a solo career, leading to the eventual disbandment of Jurassic 5 in 2007.
Stewart is also a founding member of the activist salsa funk band Ozomatli, although he is no longer an official member. Despite this, he continues to collaborate with the group and maintain his friendships with its members. Ozomatli's music, like Stewart's, is influenced by reggae, soul, and house music, reflecting his eclectic tastes and creative approach to music.
Throughout his career, Chali 2na has established himself as a unique and innovative force in the world of hip-hop, blending his distinctive voice with his passion for activism and social justice.
