Charles Norton grew up in North Carolina and was prone to illnesses such as the cold and flu. He spent his childhood summers at the beach, where he developed a strong interest in swimming and sailing. At the age of 10, he began sailing and quickly fell in love with the sport. He spent the next few years racing and learning about sailing, eventually becoming a skilled sailor.
As a teenager, Norton sailed his boat, "The Popeye", 800 miles to New York and the World's Fair, where he was greeted with a hero's welcome. He was featured on the cover of several New York newspapers and was given the Key to the City by the Mayor.
Norton attended the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with a degree in English and minors in Business and Dramatics. He was a member of the Honors Society and was captain of the University Boxing Team. After college, he served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Cuba.
After the war, Norton began his career in television, working as an Assistant Director at CBS. He later left CBS to produce a pilot film based on four books by William B. Seabrook, which starred Franchot Tone, Darren McGavin, and John Baragrey. The pilot was directed by Harold Young and was later released as a DVD.
Norton continued to work in television, directing episodes of "Wide, Wide World" and other shows. He later formed a company with James Hammerstein, son of Oscar, and they developed a screenplay written by Norman Brooks. The screenplay was later rewritten and directed by David Miller.
Norton's next project was a film called "No Hard Feelings", which he wrote and directed. The film was set in Africa and contained seven original songs by Jim Wetherly. It was an action movie that Norton had been inspired to write about rapes that were taking place on the UCLA campus when his daughter was arranging to attend the university.
Throughout his career, Norton has been recognized for his work in film and television. He has directed several episodes of popular TV shows and has been praised for his ability to bring in projects on time and on budget.
