Moon Choi, also known as Hee-Seo Choi, is a Korean actress who currently resides in Seoul, South Korea. Her childhood was spent in South Korea, Japan, and the United States, where she was exposed to various cultures, arts, and languages.
At the age of 18, Choi returned to Seoul and enrolled in Yonsei University, where she pursued a degree in Journalism and English Literature during the day and honed her acting skills at the Yonsei Theater Art Club at night. She continued her education by taking acting classes at UC Berkeley as an exchange student for a year before returning to Seoul.
Choi's professional acting career began when she landed a role in the 2009 South Korean film "Lifting King Kong," a dramatic story about female weightlifters. She then appeared in several independent films and short films that were screened at prestigious film festivals worldwide. Her short film "Janus" won the Jury's Grand Prize at the Poitiers Film Festival in France in 2015.
In 2016, Choi met a life-changing opportunity when she met a prominent writer and director, Shin Yeon-shick, on her way to a rehearsal. He invited her to meet the renowned director Lee Jun-ik, and she subsequently landed a role in his film "Dong-Ju: the Portrait of the Poet." Her performance in the film earned her critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the Wildflower Film Awards.
Choi's breakthrough role came in 2017 when she portrayed the Japanese anarchist and feminist Kaneko Fumiko in the film "Anarchist from Colony," also directed by Lee Jun-ik. Her performance earned her widespread recognition and acclaim, as well as numerous awards, including Best New Actress from the Blue Dragon Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Buil Film Awards.
