Daniel embarked on his acting career in the early 1970s, initially performing in weekly rep. Before long, he was cast in the lead role of the ITV playhouse production of "The Best of Enemies" by Christopher Fry, opposite Nigel Hawthorne and Charles Gray in Pinero's "The Schoolmistress" for Yorkshire TV.
His breakthrough year was 1978, when he starred as "Father Neil" opposite Arthur Lowe in the hit comedy series "Bless Me Father" on ITV. This role marked a significant departure from his previous character, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
In 1979, Daniel landed the iconic role of Dr. Frank'N'Furter in the original UK national tour of "The Rocky Horror Show," directed by Richard O'Brien. He went on to star in the West End production at the Comedy Theatre in 1980, and was subsequently invited to Australia, where he performed the role over 2,000 times in various tours throughout the 1980s.
Daniel's Australian credits include "The Dentist" in "Little Shop of Horrors," "Gary Lejuene" in "Noises Off" directed by Michael Blakemore, and "Armold Beckoff" in "Torch Song Trilogy." He also starred as the super villain Jake Sanders in the 1980s Australian high-gloss global hit TV series "Return to Eden."
In addition to his acting work, Daniel has also directed several productions, including a tour of "Rocky Horror" in New Zealand in 1986, which gave a young Russell Crowe his first professional acting role, casting him as Eddie in the show. Daniel also cast Russell as "Johnny" in the original production of "Bad Boy Johnny & The Prophets of Doom" in Melbourne.
Daniel has produced and directed several music TV documentaries, including "One Hit Wonders" for the BBC and "Walk on the Wildside" for ITV, a personal study of gender roles in rock and pop, featuring interviews with notable figures such as Mick Rock, Malcom McClaren, Lindsay Kemp, Pete Burns, Marc Almond, Dave Stewart, and Ray Davies.
