David Hulbert was born on August 21st, 1976, in Jupiter, Florida, to David Rodney Hulbert Sr. and Christine Hulbert. His father, who was disabled and reliant on disability benefits, separated from his mother when David was just three years old. As a result, David spent most of his life living with his father, who struggled to provide for their needs.
The family's financial struggles led to David dropping out of Jupiter High School in his junior year, in 1993. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, with his father, and soon after, they relocated to a small trailer in the Arizona Mohave desert, Dolan Spring, Arizona, where they lived without running water or electricity for over a year. David worked multiple jobs to support his father, who was unable to work due to his disability.
David's difficult circumstances led him to get into trouble with the law at the age of 17. However, this experience prompted him to reassess his life and make a change. He gained his GED in 1995 and enrolled in Mohave Community College in 1996 as an Art Major. It was during his time at college that he met his ex-wife, Leslie O'Reilly, in math class, and they eventually got married in July 1999.
David's oldest child, his daughter Megahn Kimberanne O'Reilly Hulbert, was born in June 1997. In 1998, he transferred to Northern Arizona University as an art major but soon discovered his true passion was film. Tragedy struck in January 2001 when David's father passed away, and his body was found 44 miles out into the desert by a hiker.
David's father's death had a profound impact on him, and he struggled to cope with the loss. He dropped out of school and moved his family to Florida in April 2002, where they faced a series of challenges, including eight hurricanes and a stock market crash that affected his livelihood. In June 2005, David moved his family to Atlanta, Georgia, where he has lived ever since.
Despite the challenges he faced, David was unable to find a job in his field due to the lack of a degree. He turned to the music industry for a while but eventually decided to return to college in pursuit of a Law degree in the summer of 2008. However, he was encouraged by Dr. Jeff Marker, PH.D., to join the Film Club, and later by Professor David Smith, M.F.A. Design, to switch to film.
David graduated from Gainesville State College in December 2009 with an A.A. in Media Studies and later transferred to Georgia State University to pursue a B.A. in Film and Video.
