Tomblin, widely regarded as the finest 1st assistant director in the world, co-created, produced, directed, and wrote the iconic television series "The Prisoner" in 1967.
Born in 1931, Tomblin entered the film industry at the age of 14 and later took a break to serve in the marines. He returned to the industry in 1952, working as a 1st assistant director to Stanley Kubrick.
Tomblin moved into television in the late 1950s, working on series such as "The Invisible Man" and "One Step Beyond". He joined the crew of the ITC series "Secret Agent" in 1959, where he met Patrick McGoohan for the first time.
Tomblin co-created "The Prisoner" with McGoohan, working on ideas formulated by McGoohan and story-editor George Markstein. He was credited as producer on all 17 episodes and also directed and co-wrote two more episodes, "Living in Harmony" and "Girl Who Was Death".
Tomblin continued to work in television, directing several episodes of the Gerry Anderson series "UFO", "Space: 1999", and "The Protectors".
However, it was his role as 1st assistant director in blockbuster films that made his name. His credit list is endless, and he worked on numerous films including "Gandhi", "Out of Africa", "Superman", "A Bridge Too Far", all three "Indiana Jones" films, "Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi", "Never Say Never Again", "Cry Freedom", "Chaplin", "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace", and "Braveheart".
Tomblin was awarded a BAFTA for outstanding contribution to film in 2003 and continued to work in the industry until his death in 2009, after a short illness, on the film "Beyond the Horizon".
