Deepak Rauniyar's cinematic journey began with his debut feature film "Highway" in 2012, which made history as the first Nepalese film to be showcased at a major global film festival, specifically premiering at the prestigious Berlinale and later screening at the renowned Locarno festival.
Rauniyar's subsequent feature film, "White Sun", marked a significant milestone in his career, as it made its world premiere at the Venice Orizzonti competition and went on to screen at over 100 film festivals worldwide, including the Toronto, Locarno, Rotterdam, New Directors/New Films, Sydney, and Golden Horse festivals.
"White Sun" received widespread critical acclaim, garnering numerous awards and nominations, including the Interfilm Award at Venice, Best Film at Singapore, and Palm Springs International Film Festivals. Nepal even nominated "White Sun" for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
The film received rave reviews from prominent critics, with The Hollywood Reporter describing it as "impressively accomplished", while The New York Times included Rauniyar in their "9 New Directors to Watch" list, praising "White Sun" for capturing a place that is rarely seen in movies.
