Biography

Josh Davis, better known by his stage name DJ Shadow, has been a passionate advocate for hip-hop music since the age of 10, when he first discovered the groundbreaking sounds of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's iconic single "The Message".

As a young and aspiring DJ, Davis began to make a name for himself in the early 1990s with a series of impressive mixes that showcased his unique blend of turntablism and production skills.

In 1991, Davis released his debut single "Entropy", a 17-minute epic that demonstrated his ability to craft complex, sample-driven compositions that were both melodic and thought-provoking.

This early success led to Davis signing with James Lavelle's esteemed Mo Wax Records, a Britain-based label that was home to a diverse range of innovative and avant-garde artists.

In 1993, Davis released the critically-acclaimed single "In/Flux", a hauntingly beautiful track that showcased his ability to create atmospheric, instrumental hip-hop that was both emotive and introspective.

This was followed in 1995 by the release of the groundbreaking 4-part EP "What Does Your Soul Look Like", a series of tracks that further cemented Davis's reputation as a master of sample-driven production.

However, it was 1997's "Endtroducing..." that truly cemented Davis's status as a hip-hop icon. This ambitious, sample-driven album was a critical favorite, making several end-of-the-year best-of lists and earning Davis widespread recognition as one of the most innovative and influential producers in the genre.

In the years that followed, Davis continued to push the boundaries of hip-hop, releasing the critically-acclaimed "Preemptive Strike" album in 1998, which featured a mix of previously unavailable tracks and new material.

He also collaborated with James Lavelle on the ambitious "Psyence Fiction" album, a project that saw Davis producing music under the moniker Unkle.

Today, Davis is overseeing a range of projects for Quannum Projects, a Northern California-based collective of producers and MCs that features a diverse range of talented artists, including Blackalicious, Latyrx, and Shadow himself.

Throughout his career, Davis has consistently demonstrated a commitment to pushing the boundaries of hip-hop, and his innovative approach to production has inspired a generation of artists and fans alike.
