Biography

Emily Atef, a talented and innovative German filmmaker, came into the world on May 6, 1973, in the vibrant city of Berlin, Germany, where she would later cultivate her artistic vision and pursue a distinguished career in the film industry.

Atef's life story began to unfold at the tender age of seven, when she, along with her French-Iranian parents and her younger brother Cyril, who would go on to become a skilled drummer, made the bold decision to relocate to the vibrant city of Los Angeles. This pivotal moment marked the starting point of her remarkable journey, which would take her to diverse and far-flung parts of the world, shaping her into the multifaceted individual she would become.

At the tender age of 13, Atef's life took a significant turn as her family made the bold decision to relocate to the cosmopolitan city of France, where she would go on to complete her education and lay the foundation for a promising future.

Years would pass, and Atef's thirst for creative expression would lead her to make the courageous move to London, a city renowned for its vibrant theater scene. It was here that she would embark on a career in acting, gradually building a reputation for herself as a talented and dedicated performer.

Through her tireless efforts and unwavering dedication, Atef would eventually make a name for herself within the city's thriving theater community, earning recognition and respect from her peers and audience alike.

After relocating back to Berlin, Atef went on to enroll in the renowned Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie Berlin, where she pursued a comprehensive education in film direction.

This significant academic endeavor ultimately led her to create her first feature-length film, a collaborative effort with Esther Bernstorff titled Molly's Way. The film received widespread recognition, earning an advancement award at the prestigious Filmfest München, as well as the Grand Jury Award at the esteemed Mar del Plata Film Festival.

Atef's subsequent feature films garnered widespread critical acclaim, with her second film, The Stranger in Me, tackling the profoundly sensitive and often stigmatized topic of postnatal depression with remarkable nuance and sensitivity.

Atef's cinematic masterpiece, "3 Days in Quiberon", was brought to life in 2017, as he took on the dual roles of writer and director. This feature film delves into the deeply emotional days preceding Romy Schneider's final German interview, offering a poignant glimpse into the actress's inner world.

The movie made its highly anticipated world premiere at the prestigious 68th Berlin International Film Festival, where it vied for the esteemed Golden Bear award.

Atef's most recent cinematic endeavour, aptly titled More Than Ever, boasts an impressive cast, featuring the talented Vicky Krieps and Gaspard Ulliel, and made a notable appearance in the prestigious Un certain regard section at the 75th edition of the renowned Cannes Film Festival, which took place in the year 2022.
