Eugenio Mira, a Spanish film director, writer, and musician, was born in Castalla, Alicante, Spain. After completing his studies in high school and as a piano player, he moved to Madrid in 1995 to attend the Septima Ars film school.
Mira's early career in the Spanish film industry involved working as a first assistant director, in the art department, and in the advertising world. His debut short film, Fade, released in 2000, caught the attention of Guillermo Del Toro, who became a key supporter of his career.
Del Toro introduced Mira to his agent, Robert Newman, and Mira's first long feature film, The Birthday, was released in 2004. The film gained a cult following and was shown at the first edition of Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, where Mira has since premiered many of his films.
Mira's subsequent films include the Gothic tale Agnosia, released in 2010, and Grand Piano, released in 2013, starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack. Grand Piano was released in the US by Magnet/Magnolia Pictures.
In addition to his work as a film director, Mira has also worked as a creative consultant and 2nd Unit director on international productions such as The Impossible, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, all directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.
As an occasional actor, Mira has appeared in films such as Red Lights, directed by Rodrigo Cortés, in which he played a younger version of Robert De Niro.
As a musician, Mira has released music under the name Pagana, and has also written music for his films. He has collaborated with other filmmakers, including Nacho Vigalondo and Paco Plaza, scoring films such as Timecrimes and Veronica.
In 2022, Mira directed the entire season of the HBO Max series "GARCIA!" and was responsible for the soundtrack, which was released by WaterTower Music. The series premiered at Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival, and received several award nominations, including Best Foreign Language TV series at the Critics Choice Awards.
Mira is planning to release the 20th anniversary edition of his debut film, The Birthday, in 2024.
