Floyd Patterson was born on January 4, 1935, in Waco, North Carolina. He began boxing at the age of 12 and quickly made a name for himself in the amateur circuit. Patterson won the National AAU Light Heavyweight Championship in 1951 and the Olympic gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.
Patterson turned professional in 1952 and won his first 16 fights, 12 of which were by knockout. He defeated Archie Moore to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the time, at the age of 21. Patterson's first reign as heavyweight champion lasted from 1956 to 1959, during which he successfully defended his title six times.
Patterson lost his title to Ingemar Johansson in 1959, but regained it in 1960 by defeating Johansson in a rematch. His second reign as heavyweight champion lasted from 1960 to 1962, during which he successfully defended his title three times.
