Biography

Axel Gabriel Erik Mørch, professionally known as Gabriel Axel, was a Danish filmmaker, actor, and writer who spent a significant portion of his childhood and adolescence in the captivating city of Paris.

In 1942, Axel received admission to the esteemed acting school at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, where he began his journey in the world of theatre.

Following a brief stint in Parisian theatre, he returned to Denmark and started directing television dramas in 1951.

Axel's career as a filmmaker was marked by a series of films that explored themes of eroticism and comedy, which garnered widespread popularity.

However, it was in 1977 that he embarked on a highly productive career as a director of French television films, ultimately culminating in 1985 with the historical five-episode series, "Les colonnes du ciel/Heaven's Pillars".

After a successful career in France, Axel returned to Denmark in 1987 to direct his long-held dream project, an adaptation of Karen Blixen's acclaimed novel, "Babette's Feast".

The film premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and went on to become a global phenomenon, earning the prestigious Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gabriel Axel directed approximately 25 feature films and 50 television movies, while also appearing in around 25 films.
