As the 1970s dawned, Retes began to explore the realm of short filmmaking, utilizing the S8mm format to hone his craft and build an impressive filmography.
His feature film debut, a gritty and unflinching portrayal of urban violence, was met with a mixed reaction from audiences, who were taken aback by the film's unvarnished depiction of the Mexican middle class.
Undeterred, Retes pressed on, releasing his second feature, Nuevo Mundo, in 1976, only to see it fall victim to censorship due to the controversy surrounding its subject matter, the divinity of the Vírgen de Guadalupe.
As the years passed, Retes continued to tackle complex and controversial political subjects, earning him a reputation as one of the most socially conscious and committed Mexican directors of his generation.
In the 1980s, Retes turned his attention to promoting the work of young directors and experimenting with video production, a creative outlet that allowed him to continue pushing the boundaries of his art.
Although he never formally retired, Retes's critically acclaimed film Bulto, El, released in 1991, marked a triumphant comeback, reuniting him with his loved ones, including his son Juan Claudio, daughter Gabriela, mother, and wife, Lourdes Elizarraras, in a testament to the enduring power of family and art.
