Garret's artistic odyssey commenced in his hometown of Minneapolis, where he initially explored the realm of short filmmaking during his college years. This early foray into the world of cinema laid the groundwork for his future endeavors, as he continued to refine his skills by enrolling in the esteemed American Film Institute.

Garret's exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to his craft were soon acknowledged, as he was awarded a substantial $35,000 grant from the esteemed National Endowment for the Arts.

With this generous grant, Garret had the opportunity to write, produce, and direct the short film SPARK, which made its world premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

The film's success did not go unnoticed, as it went on to be showcased at the renowned New Directors/New Film event held at the iconic Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
