Gary Anthony James Webb, professionally known as Gary Numan, was born on March 8th, 1958, in Hammersmith, London. His early career began with a dispatch boy position at a courier company near Heathrow Airport, where his father worked as a bus driver. Numan's first band, Mean Street, recruited him primarily due to his extensive music equipment. He later joined The Lasers, where he met Paul Gardiner, and the duo formed The Tubeway Army.
The inaugural album, also titled Tubeway Army, was recorded with Numan, Paul, and Gary's uncle, Jess Lidyard, on drums. It was during this recording process that Numan stumbled upon a synthesizer in a recording studio, courtesy of his record label, Beggars Banquet. This discovery sparked his fascination with synthesizers, and he began creating music with them.
Numan's breakthrough hit, "Are 'Friends' Electric?", was released in 1979 and topped the British charts. This success was followed by another chart-topping single, "Cars". Thirty years after his debut record release, Gary Numan continues to produce studio albums and perform live, solidifying his enduring presence in the music industry.
