Biography

The enigmatic and multifaceted individual, whose true identity remains a subject of debate, emerged onto the entertainment scene under a variety of pseudonyms, each one a testament to his versatility and adaptability.

Born, allegedly, either as Eassy White in the bustling metropolis of New York City or, alternatively, as George Weitz in the vibrant city of Toronto, Canada, this chameleon-like performer began his career as a key member of a dynamic dance team, alongside the talented Benny Ryan.

Together, they traversed the vibrant landscape of the burlesque circuit, honing their craft and perfecting their art in a series of energetic and captivating performances. Later, they made the transition to the esteemed stages of Broadway, where they took on supporting roles, further refining their skills and broadening their appeal to a wider audience.

Throughout his career, this elusive and talented individual continued to reinvent himself, adopting various personas and performing under a range of different names, each one a reflection of his boundless creativity and unwavering dedication to his craft.

The turning point in his life's trajectory was his pivotal appearance in the esteemed Florenz Ziegfeld's Ziegfeld Follies, a milestone that ultimately catalyzed his own ascension to the status of a renowned theatrical impresario.

He made his debut in the Follies of 1911, a performance that served as a springboard for his future endeavors. Five years later, in 1915, he reappeared in the Follies, where he not only solidified his reputation as a charismatic performer but also introduced the Turkey Trot dance to the world, its popularity soaring as a direct result of his charismatic stage presence.

George White, a pioneering figure in the world of entertainment, took the bold step of launching his own production company, aptly titled George White's Scandals, in the year 1919. This innovative endeavor brought together a unique blend of popular songs, side-splitting comic sketches, and eccentric dancers, all of which were carefully curated to create a truly unforgettable experience. In a bold move, White even introduced his own interpretation of the legendary Ziegfeld girls, a testament to his unwavering confidence in his artistic vision.

The show, a resounding success, managed to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences everywhere, despite being slightly more modest in scale compared to the illustrious Ziegfeld Follies.

The 1926 edition of Scandals, a musical revue, achieved remarkable success, boasting an impressive run of 424 performances, which was no doubt largely attributed to the widespread popularity of the Black Bottom dance craze that swept the nation during that era.

Beyond his esteemed work on Scandals, White's creative endeavors extended to the realm of book musicals and legitimate plays on the illustrious Broadway stage. In addition to his accomplishments in the world of theater, White also ventured into the realm of cinema, donning the hats of movie director, producer, and screenwriter. His impressive filmography boasts a multitude of productions, including the Scandals series, which he not only directed and produced but also brought to life with his own writing. Furthermore, his talents did not stop at behind-the-scenes work, as he also made appearances in and lent his writing credits to other films.

In the year 1946, a significant event occurred in the life of White, which had far-reaching consequences. He was involved in a hit-and-run accident, a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two innocent lives. The gravity of the situation was such that White was subsequently sentenced to a period of nine months' imprisonment. Following his release from prison, White endeavored to revive his nightclub act, Scandals, but unfortunately, it met with failure, ultimately leading to his financial ruin and bankruptcy.

It is with profound sadness that we note the passing of the renowned individual, who left an indelible mark on the world, on a particular day in the year 1968. At the ripe age of 77, this extraordinary being succumbed to the devastating effects of leukemia, a cruel fate that ultimately claimed their life. In a poignant farewell, their mortal remains were laid to rest in the esteemed Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park, nestled in the heart of North Hollywood, a testament to their enduring legacy.
