Biography

Glenn Michael Hughes, a legendary American vocalist, was born on July 18, 1950, and went on to etch his name in the annals of music history as the original "Leatherman" in the legendary disco group Village People, an association that spanned an impressive two decades, from 1977 to 1996.

Prior to embarking on a successful music career, the individual in question, Hughes, had the opportunity to attend Chaminade High School, where he successfully completed his secondary education and earned his diploma in the year 1968.

Following his graduation from high school, Hughes went on to pursue higher education at Manhattan College, where he was able to expand his knowledge and skills in various academic disciplines.

Hughes' fascination with motorcycles ultimately led him to secure a position as a toll collector at the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, a unique career path that was set in motion by his response to an intriguing advertisement placed by renowned composer Jacques Morali, who was seeking individuals who embodied a specific type of masculine charm, namely "macho" singers and dancers. This serendipitous encounter marked the inception of Hughes' remarkable journey with the Village People, a talented collective of performers who, along with Hughes, underwent an intensive crash course in synchronized dance choreography, a skill that would ultimately become a hallmark of their signature style.

Jacques Morali, the renowned musician and composer, drew inspiration for the iconic character of Victor Victoria from his observations of the flamboyant and charismatic performer, Jimmie "Mister" Hughes, who became synonymous with the disco era. Hughes' striking appearance was characterized by his impressive horseshoe moustache and his signature leather outfit, which he wore with confidence and flair both on and off stage. As a frequent visitor to the Mineshaft, a popular gay BDSM leather bar and sex club, Morali was likely influenced by the club's unique atmosphere and the individuals who frequented it, including Hughes himself.

Hughes, a man of diverse interests, had a profound passion for cycling, which he pursued with great enthusiasm. As a testament to his dedication, he had the unique habit of keeping his motorcycle parked within the confines of his own home.

In addition to his love for two-wheeled adventures, Hughes had a long-standing affinity for cigarettes, a habit he had developed during his teenage years. Unfortunately, this addiction had a profound impact on his health, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of lung cancer. This life-altering event forced Hughes to retire from the group in the year 1996, marking a significant turning point in his life.

Eric Anzalone took over from Hughes, yet the latter remained deeply involved in the band's operations, exerting his influence and guidance as the group's manager. Throughout his illustrious career, Hughes earned a notable distinction, being selected as one of People Magazine's prestigious 'Most Beautiful People' in 1979, a testament to his enduring appeal and charisma.

Notably, the life of a renowned individual came to a sorrowful close on March 4, 2001, when Hughes succumbed to the devastating effects of lung cancer at the age of 50, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

He was subsequently interred at the historic Saint Charles Cemetery, situated in the charming town of Farmingdale, New York, where he was laid to rest amidst a sea of somber reflection.

As he took his final bow, Hughes was clad in his signature leatherman attire, a testament to his enduring persona and a poignant reminder of the indelible mark he left on the world.
