Huo Jianqi, a renowned Chinese film director, embarked on his cinematic journey in the art department, much like his fellow cinematographer-turned-director, Gu Changwei.
Throughout his career, Huo has consistently collaborated with his wife and writing partner, Qiu Shi, who pens the scripts for nearly all of his films under the pseudonym "Si Wu".
Unlike many of his contemporaries and predecessors, Huo has remarkably few issues with the Chinese government regarding his films, earning him the nickname "darling director of China's film bureaucracy" from Western critics.
