Paul Jackson Pollock was born on January 28, 1912, in Cody, Wyoming. He was the youngest of five sons born to LeRoy Pollock and Charlotte Hanley. Pollock's family moved to Arizona in 1916, where he spent most of his childhood. He developed an interest in art at an early age and began painting and drawing as a teenager.
Pollock's artistic talents were recognized early on, and he received a scholarship to study at the Art Students League in New York City. During his time at the league, he was influenced by the works of the French Fauvists and the American Regionalists. In 1938, he married Lee Krasner, a fellow artist, and the couple settled in New York City.
Pollock's artistic style evolved significantly during the 1940s, and he became known for his unique technique of dripping and splashing paint onto a canvas laid flat on the floor. This technique, known as action, painting allowed him to create dynamic and expressive works of art that were unlike anything seen before.
Throughout his career, Pollock was recognized for his innovative and groundbreaking work. He was awarded numerous grants and commissions, and his paintings were exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Despite his success, Pollock struggled with personal demons, including addiction and depression. He died in a car accident on August 11, 1956, at the age of 44.
