James Chance, a renowned saxophonist, was a prominent member of the influential punk rock group Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, whose music was featured on the acclaimed compilation album No New York curated by the visionary musician Brian Eno.
Following his stint with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Chance went on to form his own group, the Contortions, which became a significant force in the punk rock scene. However, the Contortions eventually disbanded, leading Chance to re-emerge as White and found a new musical venture, James White and the Blacks.
What made James White and the Blacks truly remarkable was its all-black lineup, with the exception of Chance himself, featuring an impressive roster of talented musicians. This ensemble included the accomplished trombonist Joe Bowie, who would go on to found the influential jazz-funk group Defunkt, as well as the accomplished guitarist Bern Nix.
Throughout his career, Chance has released numerous albums with both the Contortions and James White and the Blacks. Even today, he remains an active and innovative force in the music world, continuing to create and perform with his latest project, James White and the Sardonic Sinphonics, and releasing new music that is sure to captivate audiences.
