Jan Shutan, a talented actress, is most notably remembered for her iconic role as Lieutenant Mira Romaine, an officer on the starship Enterprise, in the 1969 episode "The Lights of Zetar".
Born Janice Dottenheim in Los Angeles and raised in Beverly Hills, Jan was bitten by the acting bug early on. She got her big break in 1955 after winning the CBS variety show Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts.
Jan's career as an actress spanned over three decades, from the 1960s to the 1980s. She worked as a model before making her TV debut in a 1963 episode of Arrest and Trial. She went on to appear in numerous TV shows, including The Outer Limits, The Fugitive, Night Gallery, Quincy, M.E., Ben Casey, and Room 222, with notable guest spots in each.
Jan also had recurring roles in Ben Casey and Room 222. She eventually retired from acting in 1988.
In her personal life, Jan was married twice. Her second husband was the Emmy Award-winning writer-producer David Levinson, whom she met on the set of the short-lived CBS drama series Sons and Daughters in 1974. Unfortunately, he predeceased her in 2019.
