John Seongho Choi, a multifaceted filmmaker with Canadian-South Korean roots, is based in Toronto, Ontario. After graduating in Fine Arts from York University in 1992, Choi embarked on a journey that would shape his career in the film industry.
He initially worked as a stills photographer assistant in New York City, where he soon discovered his passion for motion pictures. Choi joined the ARRI Motion Picture Company NYC equipment rental house, gaining valuable experience in the field.
As his skills and expertise grew, Choi transitioned to a freelance film crew career, taking on roles as a camera assistant/focus puller. He became a member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 644 East Coast Camera Union in 1996, which later merged into Local 600 The International Cinematographers Guild.
Choi's extensive experience in the film industry led him to work on numerous productions, including Godzilla, In Dreams, 54, The Bone Collector, 28 Days, Hurricane, The Out Of Towners, and O Brother Where Art Thou?. His work took him to various locations, including New York City and abroad.
In 2005, Choi returned to Toronto, where he focused on music videos, collaborating with several bands. He then shifted his attention to directing television and factual true crime series.
In 2006, Choi founded his own production company, Playground Films, which has been instrumental in his creative endeavors. In 2015, he released his first feature documentary film, Lost & Found, and followed it up with the feature documentary film Spaceman in 2019.
Throughout his illustrious career, Choi has demonstrated his versatility, adaptability, and dedication to his craft, earning him a reputation as a talented and respected filmmaker.
